    This is a clearly written account of the battle by an expert on the Scottish Wars of independence. All the historical sources are considered and alternative conclusions are discussed. Where something is unknown the author says so and avoids the speculation and romanticism that plagues most accounts of this period of Scottish history. If you want a clear factual account of what we actually know about Bannockburn then you will enjoy this book. Recommended!

    A caveat: this is a scholarly treatment of Bannockburn using the available primary and secondary sources, along with a good summary of findings from the acknowledged scholars of the period. This is not a narrative popular history book per se. Very well done, the author's marshalling of his arguments based on the evidence are persuasive, and a number of common assumptions about the conflict and its context are punctured. A useful primer for reading more detailed history of the period, e.g. Barrow [...]
