The Comedienne first published in 1896 is the debut novel of Wladyslaw Reymont who after publishing several much better works (notably Promised Land and Peasants) won the 1924 Nobel Prize for literature. I liked this book for the insight it provides on life in late 19th century Poland and for the slow burning trajectory that the narrative describes. This novel depicts a young woman, Janina, whose desire for a modern notion of freedom is not met by a sympathetic society.

The story of an aspiring actress with a tragic ending. It was well written but I just didnt enjoy reading it.
