I’m finding myself in the gutter more often than I’d like.In this brooding mash-up of noir and science fiction (I guess sorta like Blade Runner in that sense), a nameless former hero of a failed revolution known as The Struggle is now trying to eke out a meager existence by working as a memory thief, stealing memories of the time before the Struggle, and selling them to memory junkies that want a little inkling of happiness. But then the thief finds something in those memories that might be [...]

Gorgeous little oddity this is. BY THE NAILS OF THE WARPRIEST packs an emotional punch, which being thoroughly precise and a small technical achievement. Nik Korpon is a writer with a stunning clarity of vision and such skill with language, I would be jealous if I didn't enjoy this so much. It's short, it barely clocks over sixty pages, but what a great, tainted and intoxicating vision of the future after the world died down. It's science-fiction, it's a distopia, it's hardboiled as all hell. Gr [...]

This is probably the best thing I've read from Nik Korpon so far. With everything I read he seems to become a better and better writer. I loved the dystopian setting he has created. Hopefully we'll see more stories set in this world. The only problem I had with it is that it was too short. I wanted more! Great book.

Excellent dystopian sci-fi noir with a totally cool plot centered around memory stealing. The language is lush, poetic, beautifully dense, and completely captivating on its own.

In a post-apocalyptic world where The Struggle was meant to save the lives of The People, memories have been outlawed. The Thief barely makes a living by stealing the scenes and lives from the elderly; selling them to junkies that get off experiencing life through the minds' eye of the past. Now, children play on the rubble of buildings and statues, rather than in grassy fields and parks, under the burning red skies of a world destroyed by war and terror. The Thief goes on believing that his fam [...]

In a world with no apparent future, The Thief lives in and off the past. Once one of the leaders of The People in their rebellion against The Party, The Thief now wanders the ruins of The City looking for those from whom he can steal memories. In a place where children play amongst rubble and an entire generation has no understanding of the way things used to be before The Struggle, memories are a commodity more valuable than diamonds or gold, heroin or cocaine ever were. The Thief knows this bett [...]

By the Nails of the Warpriest is at once literary, sci-fi, noir and steam punk - the culmination of a dystopian setting fueled by violence and despair yet redeemed by a slither of hope and hint of love. Nik Korpon waxes poetic throughout this ingenious novella with each line complementing the following to add a sense of beauty to a world devoid of all its enchantment. The protagonist, a thief of memories, consists amongst distrust, hopelessness and blood as he forges a future by robbing others o [...]

While reading By The Nails of the Warpriest, I felt like I was observing this gorgeous, horrific painting. I felt like I could feel the heat off the streets and feel the ash floating in my face. The mood of this novella is, definitely, dark and brooding. I found myself holding my breath, at times. The protagonist is nameless. We follow him through the streets of The City collecting memories for The Boss to sell at his gallery. Memories in this world is the drug of choice. It gives the hopeless s [...]

Those who know Nik Korpon’s work, know that he has a smoothness of language and polished confidence with his writing that even many veterans haven’t achieved. He’s something special. When you read something from Nik Korpon you’re reading for mind and soul in the truest sense of the words. With By the Nails of the Warpriest, Nik takes a bit a detour from his Baltimore noir roots and delivers something a bit darker, a bit more sci-fi, perhaps something Cormac McCarthy would write if he were [...]

Nik Korpon is a very generous writer, both literally and figuratively. Literally because he has no qualms about giving his work away free for interested readers to try (I got By the Nails of the Warpriest free from Blasted Heaths' website a while back but have also picked up novella Old Ghosts & a collection of Baltimore stories from the authors own website )and figuratively because he packs so much into this work that it feels like a novel three times its length. Read the blurb for a rundow [...]

By the Nails of the Warpriest is set in a time when bottled memories are more sought-after than street drugs. Nik Korpon creates an epic dystopian landscape and moves the plot along with both action and pure poetry. The protagonist is a damaged soul, a memory thief who murders people in order to extract precious secrets. But you can't help but root for him as he tries to figure out the story behind his missing wife and son.The backdrop Nik creates has endless potential, and I wanted more. A coup [...]

Nik Korpon has a particular talent he uses to great effect in his writing. Be it in dark as coal Baltimore noir or here, in the post-apocalypse, he uses the settings and conventions of whatever genre he is playing in the tell a simple, human story. In this novella, Korpon speaks of the lose of family set against a world ravaged by revolution. If there is anything that could hold this piece of art back it is the brevity. You want more, of the characters and the world. BY THE NAILS OF THE WARPRIES [...]

This is one of my absolute favorite Nik Korpon pieces. This novella pulls you in from the very first pages, and immerses you in dark fantasy, neo-noir mayhem, and visceral, palpating violence. Expect more greatness from Nik Korpon in the near future. He's an author to keep an eye on.

    Chilling and very well-written.

A quick read with nary a sentence wasted, dropping the reader en medias res. Many breathtaking passages assaulting the senses make this Nik's best yet, in my opinion.

My favorite Nik Korpon work so far.
