I always love book that is written in simple, spoken language - and this is one of them. I read this book in Vietnamese version (very nice cover). This book can give you a different point of view of people and society in Singapore and difficulties that a taxi driver is facing day by day. It's fun and easy to read. Highly recommend!

Very simply written, the stories are heartfelt & give you the opportunity to reflect. It's always being said that chatting to taxi drivers allows you to penetrate into the heart & soul of a community and reading this collection of anecdotes certainly demonstrates that. The author's transformation from senior research scientist with a Stanford PhD to Singapore taxi driver within 6 months also demonstrates how fragile our connection to our own "reality" can be. I picked this up so randomly [...]

Easy read, but just so-so. Non-Singaporeans will find it more interesting.

A diary by a taxi driver. We can see a very simple thing can change a man's life. From a professor to a taxi driver.

Interesting insight into a taxi driver's gruelling life in Singapore, and his encounters with passengers. People think that cab fares are expensive, but we don't realise that it costs $77 to rent a taxi per day, not counting fuel costs. Taxi drivers get no weekends off, or sick leave. Sometimes they drive for up to 12 hours a day just to make about $30. I find that really disheartening; the companies ought to try to lower the taxi rental costs because taxi drivers need breaks and time with their [...]

I had chanced upon his blog at taxidiary/ and had followed it for some time. This book (most of which can be found in the blog) is a good collection of short stories which reveals a side of Singapore that is less talked about and known to those who work the nights. How we are as a society shows through how we treat those we deem 'inferior' to us - in which case the behaviour of the taxi riders in the book is telling through its tales of generosity and meanness. I bought this as a show of support [...]

Requested by a student I thought this sounded quirky, unfortunately the writing is fairly ordinary. Based on the authors blog when he finds himself unemployed. The author goes from a high status job with his PhD to driving a taxis in the highly competitive taxi market of Singapore. His glimpses into peoples humanity made from the anonymity of being a driver are what makes this book interesting.

Mingjie was laid off from his job as a scientist at a research institute in Singapore. After many months searching for work and no income, (Singapore has no unemployment insurance) Mingjie became a taxi driver. Most chapters are only a page or two and are simply written, but they provide interesting insight into everyday Singaporean lives as well as the inside scoop on the bureaucracy of being a taxi driver in Singapore.

Not going to win reviews for writing, but this collection of blog posts is interesting from the outside looking in on the life of a highly educated man that takes temporary employment as a taxi driver. For all those that believe that Singapore is a 'civilized' society without any vice, the levels and extremes of the people that Cai meets on the road dispel that myth and show the real side of Singapore. Good, bad and sometime frankly not very pretty.Very quick and fascinating read.

    Amanda Banks
This is a true-life story about a university professor with a PhD from Harvard forced into cabdriving in Singapore after losing his research job. He is not a good writer but his stories are fascinating. Also very illuminating about life in Singapore. Grade: B

Easy reading, not great literature but pieces of people's life . I found the book very interesting . As a foreigner in Singapore makes me think differently now when I climb in a taxi.

In a way this book is an eye opener. I think my favorite story was the Virgin Ride.
