"Like, oh, hey, great, here's the rest of my life and it's all still laid out in front of me." UGH this book took me way too long to read considering the length. It was definitely worth it, though."What You Need" is a collection of short stories involving a variety of characters in a variety of situations. In includes 16 beautifully-written shorts that are just well, pretty great.Overall, I think these stories are definitely stories that affect how you see people. Each short in this book have un [...]

There are very few story writers in this country who cover territory that I find extremely interesting, and Forbes is one of them. There’s a serious quality and depth to Forbes’ characters. He’s got a lot of stories in here with real stakes to them, which sets this book apart from many other collections out there. And the writing is pretty damn good too. There’s a sense of things lost that you can’t ever get back, and there’s a beauty in it, the way he tells it. An excellent collecti [...]

Loved, loved, loved these stories, especially The Gamechanger, which made me feel like I was back in The Art of Fielding. A fabulous collection -- some of these stories are just a couple of pages, and I liked that they didn't all have the same predictable arc. Highly recommended. So impressed with what Invisible Publishing is doing.

So I'm not the biggest fan of short stories, but the thing about this book was that I liked them enough to be disappointed that they WERE short stories. In the first story alone, for instance, I could have totally been fine if it had ended up a novella. In fact, I'm super intrigued and would love to know what happens next. The book is written in a way that makes you immediately "get" these characters. You can understand and empathize with them, and while not all the stories were out there in term [...]

Full disclosure: Andrew is a good friend, as are the publishers of this book. Still, I think this is an extremely strong and moving collection of fiction. There are certain elements that don't grab me as much as others--the sports stuff is so foreign to me that it soars by me--but the majority of the stories hit home so that I find myself thinking about them long after I've finished reading them. Andrew is undoubtedly a hugely talented writer and this is an extremely satisfying example of his ab [...]

These stories have a melancholy tone, but there is some wry humour, too. If you like solid prose with the odd poetic turn, and a look into the lost souls of many of today's millennials, then this is for you.

There is never a time when a story by Andrew comes my way and I don't want to read it.
