I have always been a fan of good quality Swords and Sorcery stories. Robert Howard started that with his Kull and Conan stories. The genre continued with Lin Carter's Throngor tales, Michael Moorcock's Stormbringer sagas, and -- unfortunately - it then often deteriorated into generic rubbish written by people who didn't understand the basics of what they were writing. What was that? Based on Babylonian myth, this book tells the story of Ninshi. Her lover is held prisoner by the Manthycore, a beast that eats men. Endeavour award read, no way I'd have picked this up by choice. That said, it was not as bad as I expected. Basically a Conan-style tale inspired by Babylonian-ish mythology. Lots of killing, a quest that doesn't quite make sense. 2.5 of 5.
